Idiopathic Scoliosis in Children

The most commonly referred to type of scoliosis is idiopathic scoliosis, which is generally found in children starting around the age 10 or when they start puberty. Scoliosis is a condition that causes the spine to curve sideways. Idiopathic simply means that the cause of the scoliosis is unknown.  Although the cause is unknown, the treatment is well established and the most effective in reducing the curves and maintaining corrections if treated during puberty.  New research that is coming out says that there may be a genetic link to idiopathic scoliosis but this number is less than 30% of cases. Of course, if you have scoliosis or were treated for it when you were younger, let your child’s pediatrician know.

Regardless of if you have a genetic predisposition to scoliosis, it is important to check for signs from a very early age.  Make sure your pediatrician checks or see a chiropractor who specializes and certified in scoliosis treatment. The most common way to check is done using the “Adam’s forward bend test.” Your child simply stands with their feet together and their knees straight while they bend over with their arms free. This provides a point for the doctor to examine the spine and check for any curvatures.

Idiopathic curves are generally more mild than severe although this can change as your child continues to grow. Your doctor may recommend X-rays to determine the exact bone structure of your child’s spine. This allows them to see the degree of the curve which will help to further determine their treatment path. A spinal curve that is less than 10 degrees will likely just need to be monitored with x-rays and check ups throughout the year. For curves that are greater than 25 degrees, bracing may be necessary.

There are several different types of braces varying in effectiveness. The most effective ones are custom made to fit your child’s body and are particular their curves to produce an “over corrective” position. The ScoliBrace is designed to address the 3 dimensions of scoliosis, the sideways bending and rotational component as well as create an “over corrective” position. Lose clothes easily cover the brace and you will be guided as to how long your child wears the brace and for what activities they can take it off.  As your child continues to grow, be aware of any fast growth spurts which can cause further damage. Working with your child’s pediatrician and a scoliosis specialist are ideal in monitoring your child’s health.
